Parents and Families

We believe that effective interventions is a team effort with all parties working together for common goals.  Partnership with parents is an integral component to the effectiveness of each child’s intervention. As such, Academy parents are active participants in their children’s programs and we are committed to supporting them in a variety of ways, including:

  • Partnership in the development of Individual Educational Plans – We value and understand the importance of working with our families to address each child’s and family’s specific needs.
  • Parent training sessions – Families benefit from parent education sessions, during which they learn about topics such as the basic concepts of applied behaviour analysis, how to manage challenging behaviours, using picture exchange communication systems (PECS) and implementation of specific interventions.
  • Participation during Instructional Sessions – Where appropriate, parents can get hands-on experience in skill-building and behaviour management by participating during 1:1 sessions.
  • Generalisation to the natural environment – Programming is only as effective as its utility in the child’s natural environment – daily family life!  We will keep parents informed of the skills their children are learning so that they can reinforce these skills at home to ensure gains are generalised and maintained outside of the preschool setting.
  • Biannual Program Reviews – In addition to the regular contact about skills being taught, staff will meet with families twice each year to review overall progress, curriculum completion, and short- and long-term goals.
